Commissioned Officers Training Academy (COTA)
The Commissioned Officers Training Academy (COTA) offers an “Officer Basic Course (OBC)”. Enrollment in the OBC is limited to new calls to active duty. Successfully completion of the OBC earns the PHS Training ribbon. Formerly, a follow-on “Independent Officer Training Course” (IOTC) had more in depth modules, but has been discontinued.
Training Courses in Development
- Officer Intermediate Course
- The Intermediate Officer training course will incorporate the inter-Agency concept into an officer’s Corps development. It will also help the officer to prepare for assignments in mid-level management and supervision positions. A pilot course is planned for 2009.
- Officer Advanced Course
- All officers will be eligible for the Advanced Officer Training Course, which is designed to build future Corps leaders. The Training and Career Development Steering Committee will coordinate with Corps leadership to establish criteria for priority placement in this course, which will train Corps officers in advanced leadership matters. A pilot course is planned for 2009.
- Officer Executive Course
- Executive training will be offered to selected officers. The Training and Career Development Steering Committee will work with Corps leadership to identify specific qualification guidelines to identify potential officers. A pilot course is planned for 2010.
